2010 Chess Olympiad Khanty-Mansiysk preview

The numbers astonish and stagger: 143 nations, 1294 competitors of which 797 are titled, including no fewer than 254 grandmasters, 65 WGMs, 159 IMs, and 90 WIMs. 34 players are rated 2700 or more, and 117 are rated at least 2600. There is no question that for the next two weeks, Khanty-Mansiysk will be the absolute Mecca of chess. To make things even more interesting, we are currently seeing one of the most disputed FIDE elections for some time, which will also be resolved in this period.

Logistically, such an event cannot possibly take place without its fair share of road bumps, and there have certainly been a few. The promised three hotels to house the enormous field as well as delegations didn't quite materialize, but the "Olympic" hotel was indeed finished in time. Remember that the number of 1294 competitors doesn't include the seconds, or other accompanying people. This has brought serious concerns as the traveling expenses to Siberia are not slight, and there are worries about the conditions. Until more information is reported though, we will refrain from judgment. Another concern brought up was the almost non-stop changing of charter flight dates departing the region after the Olympiad finished and has brought a great deal of discussion for many of the less privileged teams who are there almost exclusively at great personal expense, and for whom last-minute changes could be a make or break deal.

Nevertheless, the teams did arrive, and register, and the quite spectacular opening ceremony took place. Robert Fontaine from Europe Echecs was kind enough to send a video report on the opening.

That said some problems arose outside that do bear noting, such as the complete absence of Romania's men's team. In a bitter dispute with their federation regarding the financial conditions bestowed upon them, an impasse arose in which the team refused to go. On the other hand, Russia seems to have ensured their absence will be compensated for as they have no less than FIVE men's teams, and three women's. Unsurprisingly, their top team is also the event 's top seed with Kramnik on top board, followed by Grischuk, Svidler and Karjakin, and Malakhov as their reserve. Ukraine is not far behind with a stellar composition of Ivanchuk, Ponomariov, Eljanov, and Efimeenko, and Moiseenko as their reserve, averaging 2737 Elo. Then comes China, also able to muster a team whose average rating reaches a lofty 2703, headed by Wang Hao, Wang Yue, Bu Xiangzhi, and Zhou Jiangchao, and topping off the teams of 2700s is Russia 2, with an all-star junior team with 2010 European Champion Nepomniachtchi (aged 20), Alekseev (aged 25), Vitiugov (aged 23), and Tomashevsky (aged 21). As to individual players, one can hardly overlook Magnus Carlsen, participating for the first time as the world no.1, Topalov, the air-to-air missile for the Bulgarian team, and a special mention for the no.1 female player, Judit Polgar who has only played eleven tournament games in the last 18 months, and who will play board three for the 5th seeded Hungarian team behind Leko, and Almasi.

Watching the games

It goes without saying that the options to watch the games live are wide and varied. You can watch them at no cost on Playchess, enjoying the software's new options to display multiple boards at the same time, and if you are a Premium member, live grandmaster commentary will be provided on Playchess for every round by GM Daniel King, author of the best-selling Power Play series, and GM Yasser Seirawan. If you miss the live games, you can always watch the commentary after the fact, or get an abridged tale via the Daily Roundup show also hosted on Playchess at 6 PM UTC (2 PM New York). Again, if you miss the show, it remains available on the server at your disposal.
