Position after White's ninth move. What
was the game?
The 2008 series of puzzles would not be complete without
a ‘proof game’, a puzzle in which you are told
the position at a certain point in a game and you then have
to reconstruct the game. It is required that the moves are
all legal, but they don’t have to be sensible. The
diagram position is symmetrical, but how is it possible
to reach it in the required number of moves?
Problems selected and annotated by John
Nunn. The solutions to all puzzles will be published in
the second week of January. Readers may now send in solutions
and comments. Please use the feedback form by clicking the
link on the left of this page.
