Fifth FIDE Grand Prix in Jermuk, Armenia

This event is taking place from August 8th-24th 2009. It is a Category 19 tournament, with eleven of the 14 players rated over 2700. The event is a memorial to former world champion Tigran Petrosian, who held the title from 1963–1969 and would have turned 80 on June 17th this year.

Rest day activities in Jermuk

Friday was a rest day, and a well deserved one at that, considering that the games have generally been quite well fought in Jermuk, with the players trying to grab a full point wherever possible. The reward: a trip up into the mountains to visit Noravank, a 13th century Armenian monastery.

The famous Noravank Monastery, located 122 km from Yerevan in a narrow gorge made by the Darichay river. Armenia was the first nation to adopt Christianity as the state religion, in 301 AD.
