Note: Originally we gave 44...Ke5 as the final move. This was an error. Henrik Carlsen confirmed that 44.g5 was the last move play, by Topalov, who resigned when he saw that Magnus could play 44...Rxe1+ with an immediate win.
The reason the error crept in was that it is the habit of the arbiters to place the king of the winning side on the square e4 or e5 (and both kings on these squares to signify a draw) after the game is over, to indicate the result. So they placed the black king on e5, and apparently the sensor board picked this up and recorded it as part of the game in the official bulletin. The error has in the meantime been corrected. |
