'Fischer and Miyoko were indeed married'

by ChessBase
1/27/2008 – Did Bobby Fischer marry the president of the Japan Chess Association, Miyoko Watai, with whom he lived for some years in Japan? This question moves out of the gossip columns and requires serious investigation as questions are raised in the press about the legality of Fischer's "secret burial" – and the fate of his estate, estimated at about £1.5 million. We have received a letter from a close associate.

Recent reports in the press suggest that the legality of Bobby Fischer's quiet burial in the small cemetery at Laugardalur church, outside the town of Selfoss, 60 km south of Reykjavik, may be called into question. The Telegraph report as follows:

The grave was dug in secret as darkness descended over the white frozen landscape around the village of Hraungerdi, ready for Bobby Fischer's last getaway. Not even the minister whose churchyard it was knew of the funeral planned for the following morning. Only five people attended the brief service early on Monday, conducted in the half-light before the short Icelandic day had properly begun. Among them was Gardar Sverrisson, Fischer's closest friend of the last few years and the man who had organised the digging of the grave without seeking the permission of Iceland's Lutheran Church or of the state authorities.

Sverrisson had also secured the services of a Roman Catholic priest from Reykjavik, some 30 miles to the west. Fischer was not a Catholic but must have been content with the arrangement – Sverrisson would have followed the American's instructions to the letter. The fifth mourner may or may not have been Fischer's wife, a Japanese woman named Miyoko Watai.

Some of Fischer's friends believe the burial is unlawful. If Miss Watai was not his wife, they argue, then she and Sverrisson had no right to carry out the burial without seeking the permission of his estate's legal representatives. There is the additional matter of money: Fischer's Swiss bank account is thought to have held about £1.5 million, and there may be more in gold deposits.

Full story in the Telegraph

In response to our own report on Fischer's final weeks (which has been translated into Russian by Valery Golubenko) a former close associate of Fischer, Canadian consultant John Bosnitch, wrote to us clarifying the status of the marriage to Miyoko Watai. Bosnitch describes his own role in the Fischer saga in a brief biography that follows.

Fischer and Miyoko were indeed married

I defended Bobby Fischer for nine months in Japan against the U.S. attempt to extradite him. Not only was his extradition impossible because his "offense" of unauthorized chess playing was not a crime in Japan – the U.S. seizure of and attempt to retroactively cancel his passport was also illegal. The U.S. government and U.S. embassy personnel treated their own Constitution as if it were a worthless piece of paper in Japan. In defending his own constitutional rights, Fischer defended true American values against numerous violations by the U.S. authorities and Japanese officials acting under U.S. direction.

During the course of his defense, Bobby agreed that it was time to publicly recognize his de facto marriage with Miyoko Watai, with whom he had been living in common law for years. I was the male witness to that marriage and the marriage certificate bears my name. The fact that the U.S. had illegally seized Bobby's passport was initially an impediment to getting the Japanese to register the marriage, but after we argued that the illegal seizure of his passport violated his human right to marry, the Japanese authorities eventually issued a marriage certificate and duly registered the legal union, upon certifying his identity by other means. (They ultimately had no option but to do so, after we correctly established that the only reason a passport was normally required was to certifiably attest to the identity of a person seeking marriage and that such requirement was unnecessary as the Japanese government was only able to hold him in prison because it was already certain of his identity as confirmed by the U.S. government in its request for his extradition. Simple logic dictated that the Japanese had to recognize the marriage because they knew without any doubt who he was.)

Gardar Sverrisson and Miyoko Watai are some of the most transparently open and honest persons I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. And, as we all know, Fischer was painfully honest about his every thought and desire. I therefore have no doubt whatsoever about his will being done in the manner of his burial. It is absolutely typically "Bobby". The burial in accordance with Bobby's wishes was certainly his last revenge and escape from the heartless U.S. media and officials who chased and harassed him to the ends of the earth.

May the greatest man of chess finally rest in peace, now that he has died free in Iceland, a brave land of truly free men.

John Bosnitch
Former Chairman Committee to Free Bobby Fischer
Washington DC

The author sent us the following pictures and information about himself:

"John Bosnitch is a Canadian media consultant and civil rights activist who had been working as a journalist in Tokyo when Fischer was illegally detained. Bosnitch led the nine-month battle to liberate Fischer and to fend off the U.S. efforts to extradite Fischer to face potential penalties totaling over 20 years in jail and more than 25 million dollars in fines in the United States. Bosnitch volunteered his services at no charge as a former school chess champion and as an ethnic Serb, repaying a debt to Fischer for breaking the unjust U.S. sanctions against Serbia in 1992. Bosnitch has since relocated to Washington, DC, where he is today campaigning against the Bush Administration once again, fighting the illegal U.S. attempt to turn the Serbian historic and religious heartland of Kosovo over to Albanian separatist extremists."

Bosnitch attached three photos taken at Tokyo's Narita Airport on the day of Bobby's departure from Japan. "It was the first time the two of us could shake hands," he wrote, "after working together day and night for Bobby's freedom through a bulletproof window in the Japanese Immigration Jail for nine months."

At long last a handshake – Bobby Fischer and John Bosnitch

John tells us that "the Japanese woman in the above picture is not Bobby's wife Miyoko Watai. It is Japanese opposition Social Democratic Party leader Mizuho Fukushima, who we recruited to fight for our cause in the Japanese parliament and who personally lobbied the Icelandic parliament by satellite link to ask them to grant citizenship to Bobby. One of our many courageous supporters!"

Bobby's lead Japanese lawyer was Ms. Masako Suzuki. His U.S. lawyer was San Diego-based Richard J. Vattuone (another former school chess champion, who volunteered his services at no charge). Both of them were selected by the Tokyo-based Committee to Free Bobby Fischer because Bobby had originally refused to hire any lawyers. They worked hand in hand with the Committee and Bobby's brave Icelandic supporters.
