computer program, Hiarcs
8.0, is the star of this year's annual Republica Chess Master in Argentina.
This is not surprising, since already in 2001 it was Chess
Tiger won the same tournament by a margin of two points, achieved a GM norm
and was elected "winner of the month"
by Germany's largest computer magazine (Porsche was the loser).

Oscar Panno (above), using excellent technique and a good sporting condition, defended his lead in the the tournament. Panno drew his game against GM Hugo Spangenberg and then drew his game against Hiarcs 8.
In the latter game the computer had the white pieces and in the King's Indian that ensued the pawn structure was identical to the Hiarcs-Slipak game, tough with an important difference: a pair of knights was exchanged instead of a a bishop for a knight. After 14...Nd7 the machine played a novelty with 15.Qd3, defending c3 and eyeing f5 and c4. Black manoeuvred his pieces on the queen-side, aiming for the break ...b5. Hiarcs resisted with the plan a3 and b4, keeping an small opening advantage.
The critical moment came on move 20, where White played the dubious 20.Ba2?! Better was 20.Bb3, controlling the opponent's knight and allowing the manoeuvre Ne2-d4, trying to exploit the weak square c6. Panno, with precise play, levelled the game and a draw was agreed on move 31, in a totally drawn opposite colour bishops ending.
The other leader, Bernardo Roselli, drew his game against GM Sergio Slipak after 59 moves of a King's Indian Defense.
The Uruguayan master, playing with the black pieces, could have won if he had played 24...Nf3!, profiting from his opponent's mistake (24.Pf3xNe4 instead of 24.Nc3xNe4). Then, Slipak had his chances on move 28, when he played the erroneous 28.Qe2 (after 28.Qf6! he should probably win) and the game went on a leveled knight's ending.
In another dramatic game, Brasilian Jeffersson Pelikian defeated Diego Valerga with the black pieces, after a serious mistake by the Argentine IM in time trouble. Granara and Rodriguez, both Uruguayans, drew after a more than four hours fight, with Granara defending well in a rook endgame with a pawn less. Enrique Scarella got his first triumph by beating Carlos Paglilla after 49 moves of an English Opening. There were some important mistakes in the games, but this could be explained because of the very hard schedule, where there is no time for a proper rest.
