Volokitin wins Young Masters in Lausanne

9/22/2005 – Ukrainian champion Andrei Volokitin, 19, won the prestigious Young Maters tournament in Lausanne, Switzerland, beating reigning US champion Hikaru Nakamura in the final of the eight-player knockout event. Young Masters: "les duels des champions", is a prestigious tournament with eight of the best under-20 players of the world. It was staged from September 14–19, 2005, at the Casino de Montbenon in Lausanne. The winner was Ukrainian champion and Chess Olympiad Gold medalist Andrei Volokitin, 19, who beat the reigning US champion, 17-year-old Hikaru Nakamura, in the final. The score was 2:0.

In the playoff for third Shakhiyar Mamedyarov, 20, from Azerbaidjan defeated India's second-highest rated player and Junior World Champion Pentala Harikrishna in the tiebreaks. The two 14-year-old grandmasters Magnus Carlsen from Norway and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave from France played for fifth, Carlsen winning this one 2-0. In the Of the two girls in the end Nana Dzagnidze from Georgia was victorious over former Junior World Champion Elisabeth Pähtz.
