The event is being held in Santa Clara, with the qualification stage running from April 7 to 16. There are two groups of ten players each, and the rate of play is 90 minutes + 30 seconds. The main championship phase starts on Monday, April 18, 2005, with the top three players from each qualification group plus the seeded GMs Lazaro Bruzon and Leinier Dominguez. Currently GM Juan Borges Mateos and IM Yuniesky Quezada are leading with 4.5/7 in Group A, while GM Walter Arencibia and IM Yuri Gonzalez are in front in Group B, with the same score.
This traditional tournament is being held in Norway from April 13th - 21st. There are two GM groups with top seeds playing in Group A (average Elo: 2495). They include Sergei Tiviakov (NED 2631), Oleg Korneev (RUS 2611), and the wonder boy Magnus Carlsen (NOR 2548), who unfortunately lost his first two games in this tournament.
This event started today and will last until April 24th. It will be held in two stages: the first five rounds are being played in Malmo, the four final rounds will be in Copenhagen. Top players are Hikaru Nakamura (USA 2657), Krishnan Sasikiran (IND 2642), Curt Hansen (DEN 2633), Viorel Iordachescu (MDA 2609), and Jan Timman (NED 2607).
This will be held from April 18th-29th 2005 in Dagomys, Sochi. There are three tournaments which start at the same time: XII Russian men's team championship, the Premier League and 1st League; and VI Russian women team championship. The top 30 games of the championship will be broadcast live every day.
The Super GM Tournament in Sofia is the really big one, with six top GMs, all rated 2700 or higher (the Elo average is 2744). The event takes place from May 11 to 22, 2005 in the Grand Hotel Sofia, Bulgaria. The players are not allowed to offer draws; this can only be done by the arbiter.
The traditional Sparkassen Chess Meeting will be held from July 8 to 17, 2005, in the State Theatre in Dortmund. The organisers promise a world-class field, but only name Vladimir Kramnik at the current time. The press release says:
The framework for Germany’s most prestigious chess festival has been outlined, the preparations are in full swing: once again chess enthusiasts can look forward to an exciting festival in the chess stronghold Dortmund. The Sparkassen Chess Meeting – this will be the 33rd International Dortmund Chess Meeting – will be in the spotlight at the civic theatre from 8 to 17 July. A world-class field with a total of ten grand masters, including several top-ten players, will fight for the Dortmund trophy.
Among the starters will be the world champion: Vladimir Kramnik. In October of last year the 29- year-old Russian defended his title in classic chess. "Further top-ten and other outstanding players will provide an interesting and exciting field of contestants of the highest calibre," event manager Gerd Kolbe said.
The tournament rules: There will be one group. Thereby each of the ten grand masters will face each of his opponents once over nine rounds, from 8 to 17 July (rest day on 13 July). Whoever has gained most points after nine played rounds will be the winner and holder of the Sparkassen Chess Meeting title.
