It was a thrilling race for the medals, even if they weren't gold. Ukraine cruised to its first-ever gold medal, finishing ahead of perennial winner Russia by an impressive three point margin. China dominated the women's event by the same margin of victory ahead of the United States. It was the third consecutive gold for the Chinese squad.

Russia wiped out China 3-1 with Khalifman picking an excellent time to score his first win of the event. They needed every point because Armenia surprisingly demolished Georgia 3.5-0.5 to tie Russia on points. It went to the arcane Buchholz tiebreak system (sum of opponents' scores), where Russia took the medal by a single tiebreak point. (In 1980 they took the gold over Hungary on tiebreak points.) The best result for any top men's team was probably by the USA. They crushed Norway in the final round to jump up to a very impressive fourth place ahead of Israel and India.

The race for silver was just as close in the women's event. The USA beat Vietnam 2.5-0.5 and got the help they needed from France. Almira Skripchenko beat Tatiana Kosintseva on board one to slow the Russians, who won the other two games. This is by far the best result ever for a US women's team. (Previous best was 4th in the boycotted 1976 event in Haifa.) Julst like their men's squad, the Russian women needed tiebreak points. Georgia's win over Ukraine tied them on board points but the Russians had far better tiebreaks. Our congratulations to all the medal winners!
