Going for Gold in Calvià

10/13/2004 – The 36th Chess Olympiad begins tomorrow in Calvià. 135 men's and 91 women's teams are participating, with 782 male and 353 female players. In our previous report we introduced you to the history of the Olympiads, the organisation of the current one and the city of Calvià, where it is being held. Today, just before the event starts, we would like to introduce you to the top male and female players, as well as the top teams (note that contrary to many reports on the Internet Garry Kasparov will not be playing). At the end of our lists you will find a photo report on a very ambitious female team that is going for gold in Calvià.

Going for Gold in Calvià

A few months ago we reported on the very ambitious plans of the U.S. women’s team for the Olympiad in Calvià, led by a four-time women's world champion and three-time Olympic champion:

GM Susan Polgar. Susan is a men's grandmaster and also a well known chess trainer. Her team includes:

IM Irina Krush, a two-time Olympian. Part of her remarkable resume includes the titles of US women’s champion, Pan-Am youth champion and Mayor’s Cup champion. Irina also has one Grandmaster norm under her belt.

On board three is IM-elect Anna Zatonskih, also a two-time Olympian. Anna impressively won the Ukrainian women’s Championship two years in a row prior to coming to America. She will be competing in her first US championship in November 2004.

The team reserve player is WIM Jennifer Shahade, the reigning U.S. Women’s Champion.

The Training program of the U.S. Women’s Team was sponsored by Kasparov Chess Foundation under direction of Michael Khodarkovsky, a well-known coach recently named New Jersey State coach of the year by the New Jersey State Chess Federation. Michael Khodarkovsky will serve as a team Head coach at the Olympiad. He will be assisted by notable theoretician, Grandmaster Alexander Chernin.


The team and the people behind it: Paul Truong, Michael Khodarkovsky, Susan Polgar, Garry Kasparov, Anna Zatonskih, Jennifer Shahade, Irina Krush and WGM Rusa Goletiani (the 5th member of the training squad, who did not make the team, but would be next in line).

The team captain is FIDE Master Paul Truong. Paul won five national championships of South Vietnam and 11 national titles overall. He was considered a chess prodigy and one of the most promising juniors in Asia back in the 70’s.
