FIDE ratings: Kramnik under attack

10/3/2004 – For as long as many people can remember three players have dominated the FIDE rating list: Garry Kasparov has been leading for almost two decades; Anand and Kramnik have been following at a respectful distance. Now the latter's third position is under siege by two young players.

FIDE Rating List – October 2004

Here are the top 100 (actually 104, since many players are tied at the bottom of the list) players in the world. We see Kasparov once again in the clear lead, in spite of having lost four points in the six games he played during the rating period. Vishy Anand lost one point to remain clear second, while Vladimir Kramnik shed ten points and is being attacked by Morozevich and Topalov for the third place slot. "Moro" gained 15 points and is just two points behind the classical chess world champion. The other big winner at the top is Veselin Topalov, who gained 20 points and is just three points behind Kramnik.
