Nahed Ojjeh was born in Syria but now lives in Paris, where she dedicates herself to the promotion of chess. In 2001 she took over a traditional Paris chess club, which she has been sponsoring ever since.

The NAO Chess club, which sports players like Grischuk, Svidler, Adams, Lautier, Bacrot, Vallejo, Fressinet and Nataf, won last year's European Clubs Cup 2003.

In 2002 Madame Ojjeh joined forces with the London based Einstein Group to support the the reunification of the chess world. A full description of the reunification plan can be found in the links given below.

Unfortunately the relationship with Einstein and the reunification plans soured (after Ojjeh had already financed the Dortmund qualifier in 2002) when her British partners failed to pass on some of the monies due to the participants. Madame Ojjeh has broken all relations with the Einstein Group and concentrated her efforts on the NAO chess club.

Now Mme Ojjeh has issued a press release sharply condemning the FIDE world championship in Tripoli. We bring you the text in English, French and Russian.

The 2004 World Chess Championship in Libya: what a desolation!

The NAO Chess Club and its President, Nahed Ojjeh, would like to express their disagreement and affliction regarding the organisation of the current FIDE World Chess Championship, which has turned into a second-rate championship.

Never before, in the history of chess, has a world championship sunk so low. Never before has FIDE taken such an illegal decision. That Libya should give a substantial amount of money to FIDE to organize this event, all the while maintaining the ambiguity about the participation of Israeli players and their safety, should not come as a surprise. This kind of provocation is nothing unusual coming from the Libyan leader, Colonel Kaddhafi. However, the fact that FIDE should support this colonel, well-known for his terrorist positions against the whole world and against his own people, is an extremely serious problem.

When Libya proposes reparations for its past terrorist acts, it should ascertain that its present conduct is spotless. Unfortunately, this is far from being the case.

According to what we have learned in the press, the little colonel has been preparing an assassination attempt against the Saudi crown prince. As the saying goes, "what's bred in the bone will come out in the flesh!"

FIDE President Ilyumzhinov should pay serious attention to his decisions. Money cannot be placed above all principles.

Although our club does not take any organization's side, we want to state our complete disagreement with what is currently going on in the chess world. Since seven players from the NAO Chess Club are participating in this championship, we should also point out that nothing in their contracts with us prevents them from playing wherever they wish. To our disappointment, however, they have accepted to break away from the Israeli players and to play in an event where money comes from Colonel Kaddhafi.

The NAO Chess Club has decided not to provide any information on this event. Therefore, there shall be no coverage, no commentary nor any link about this championship on our website.

Acting otherwise would be playing into FIDE's and the little colonel's hands. Contemplating the association of FIDE with Kaddhafi, one is reminded of Chateaubriand's quote, as he saw Talleyrand taking Fouche by the arm: "Here is vice leaning on crime!"

Nahed Ojjeh, President of the NAO Chess Club.
