India mourns five bright young players killed in road accident

– In a tragedy unparalleled in the history of chess, India lost five young stars in a road accident last Sunday (Sept. 23, 2001). The five players, Sekhar, Haricharan, Mekhala Abhinav, Dasari Minu and Hema Madhuri, were a part of the 11-member team from Andhra Pradesh due to play in a FIDE rating tournament in Puri. Kramnik on Deep Fritz and world chess

– The list of 128 qualifiers for the FIDE world championship, scheduled to start on November 15 in Moscow, include Anand, Shirov, Kasparov, Kramnik and Karpov. But the last three are scheduled to play their own little world championship, as reported by ITAR-TASS and, would you believe it, Newsweek. Sombody better tell them about the clash we don't want anyone ending with egg on their faces, do we?

Fritz tops the computer ratings (yet again)

– Is this boring or what? Once again Fritz tops the latest computer ratings list with a remarkable 2726 Elo score, on an Athlon 1200 MHz with 256 MB RAM. Kasparov's incredible 3043 performance

– In twelve games played in the Europe vs Asia event in Batumi Garry Kasparov scored 11 points. The Elo performance was 3043, one of the highest in recorded chess history. Kramnik vs Deep Fritz postponed

– The Brains In Bahrain/Man vs Machine chess match has been postponed, in response to last week’s terrorist attack on the United States. Originally scheduled to take place in Bahrain during October, the match is now being planned to take place in early 2002. Asia still leads in spite of 3000+ performance by Kasparov

– The team encounter Europe vs Asia is turning out to be a disaster for the European women. While the men lead 22-14, not in the least because of an incredible 7.5/8 by one Garry Kasparov, the women trail by 5.5-18.5. This puts the Asian team in the lead with 35.5-36.5.
