Results of the First Women's Internet Tournament

The First ACP Women's Internet tournament was held on May 2nd, 2004. A total of 13 players had been registered, but Aleksandra Dimitrijevic was unable to log in on time and so the event became a twelve player round robin with eleven rounds of play.

The three top seeds, Svetlana Matveeva, Almira Skripchenko and Irina Krush started in great style, with three successive wins each. Martha Fierro of Equador followed half a point behind them. In round four Krush and Matveeva drew, while Skripchenko and Fierro both won, in round five Irina Krush lost to Natalia Kiseleva, while Almira won again for a perfect 5/5 score. Two of the games had to be restarted due to connection problems, but they were quickly completed. The other players were glad to have a short break.

The official five-minute pause came after round six, and round eight saw the key game between Skripchenko and Matveeva. Unfortunately it ended when Almira offered an early draw, which Svetlana immediately accepted. In the tenth round the second key game between Skripchenko and Krush saw the former completely dominating.

2. ACP Tournament 2.5.04 playchess.com #11888 (10), 02.05.2004

Position after 30.Ra1-e1+ Ke6-d6

White is completely winning, and any move covering the h4 square (31.Ng6 or Qh8) would have clinched it. But Almira played 31.Ng8?? and Irina saw the mate in four: 31...Qh4+ 32.Kg1 Qxe1+ 33.Kh2 Qh4+ 34.Kg1 Rc1#. 1-0.

With a round to go the top of the table saw Krush and Matveeva in the lead, with 8.5/10, and Skripchenko half a point behind. The next highest players had 6.5 points each. In the last round Matveeva beat Dronavalli, while both Krush and Skripchenko lost their games against Ambrosi and Fierro. That meant that Svetlana Matveeva was the winner, with Irina Krush in second and Almira Skripchenko in third
