Unive Festival comes to an end

by ChessBase
10/27/2013 – There was little mystery in the conclusion of the top group of Unive as So had already clinched his tournament victory with a round to spare. The two draws did not change any standings. Rodshtein was able to keep his lead in the open group and won half a point ahead of Moskalenko and L'Ami. We bring you impressions of the top, open and even the amateur groups.

The small town of Hoogeveen is again a center of attention for the chess world. Both the Unive Crown Tournament and the Unive Open have started in Hoogeveen, sponsored by the Unive cooperative insurance company in the Netherlands. The main attraction is of course the super grandmaster double round robin tournament that will run from the 20th of October until the 27th.

Final Round

Van Kampen tied for second and can be happy with his performance as he collected a cool seven rating points in the tournament

Van Wely fought a little to push with the White pieces in his last round but Van Kampen's position was too solid

The happy winner playing with a fancy set. So played at an impressive 2875 performance and gained an incredibly 13 rating points, placing him at number 32 in the world in the live list

Adams did not play as well as he did in the previous two tournaments, but it was nowhere near as bad as this picture suggests

Open Section

Maxim Rodshtein (above) was always to secure victory at the Unive Open after his draw against grandmaster Stewart Haslinger from England. Viktor Moskalenko also drew and was unable to catch the Isralei, although Erwin L'Ami also won and tied with Moskalenko for second.

Ettienne Goudriaan obtained an IM norm

Tania Sachdev's tournament was slowed down by back to back losses against Moskalenko and L'Ami. She finished with 5.5/9

GM Sipke Ernest, from the Netherlands, didn't have a good tournament and was beaten by his compatriot Erwin L'Ami in the last round

L'Ami was always in teh top boards. He finished undefeated and with two back to back wins against Sachdev and Ernst, but with four draws he was relegated to a share of second place.

Amateur Tournaments

The festival in Hoogevens was not only for the top players in the world, nor for the serious competitors that played in the International Open section, but also for the local players and enthusiasts that wanted to enjoy chess at their own pace. The Amateur events represetned a perfect opportuinty to do this.

A typical battle of generations: White was born in 2003, Black in 1921.

Sytse Faber (white) vs. Gerard de Lange. Faber is the former mayor of Hoogeveen, former member of the Dutch Parliament and former chairman of the royal Dutch chess Federation. He's one of the founders of the tournament, which started in 1996. Gerard de Lange plays in both amateur tournaments. scoring a solid 50%.

Remco Heite. Former mayor of Weststellingwerf, where the famous Remco Heite tournament is organized.

Jan Boer's visual imparity didn't stop him from starting the tournament 3/3.

Another generational picture. The kids in the front were both born in the 2000's, the kid in the back in the 1930's.
