Game of the Week #616

A historic Candidates tournament has come to an end and the surprise winner is 17-year-old Gukesh from India. Nepomniachtchi was in the (shared) lead for most of the event and Caruana made an impressive comeback towards the end, but their epic final round encounter didn't have a winner. Caruana had several opportunities to win, but Nepo escaped.

Meanwhile, Gukesh kept his cool throughout the tournament. Our game of the week is his win in the penultimate round against Firouzja.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
